Ranch House (Hwy. 371, 4 miles west of Walker, MN) – This very casual establishment is three times the size it was when I was young, but the food has barely changed. There’s still a basket of slightly overdone giant popovers (and honey butter) with every meal, still an amusingly Midwestern salad bar (which includes chocolate pudding), still an overlong menu of Minnesotan classics (chicken, pork, beef, lake fish and lots of potato-based dishes, plus wild rice), and the main reason to come is still good prime rib at an almost stupidly cheap price. The wine list is ultra-short and Gallo of Sonoma is about as good as it gets, but no one’s drinking wine anyway; this is a water, mixed drink and beer joint. If you’re in a beefy mood, this might be the best choice in the area. (Review based on multiple visits over at least 15 years, if not longer.)
