Schoen new heitz

[vineyard]Schoenheitz 2004 Riesling Herrenreben (Alsace) – Very intense, somewhere between molten steel and lava, with vibrant metal-jacketed apple and a powerful palate impact. May be a bit too much for some, but it’s dry and vibrant, and appears to have the requisite stuffing and length to age. (4/09)

Stop, look, Linsenberg

[vineyard]Schoenheitz 2004 Riesling Linsenberg (Alsace) – Brilliant green leaves – mint, makrut lime, and perhaps even a touch of sage – with vibrant intensity and a core of naked steel. Grows in intensity for the better part of an hour, then starts a long, slow fade. Vibrant, powerful, dry, and balanced. I’d be very interested to see how this ages. (4/09)

Schoenheitz, shown lows

Schoenheitz 1998 Riesling Herrenreben “Vendanges Tardives” (Alsace) – Not all that sweet, in what used to be the traditional style for Alsatian VTs, with a stark, arctic character. This could be a lot more generous, but it’s possible that the wine’s just closed up. The finish is pretty short, though, and so I’m not overly optimistic. (12/08)

Holder down

[vineyard]Schoenheitz 2005 Gewurztraminer Holder (Alsace) – Lychee and apricot, with a bitter skin component (welcome, in wines like this) and a lot of supporting structure (very welcome in wines like this). This should have a pleasant future, though not a massively long one. (10/07)
